Emelia's Grace
Here are the images I produced for my friend Danielle's children's book, Emelia's Grace. It's a nice, quiet story of a young girl falling asleep. I tried to look through those eyes while creating these illustrations. I've got a physical copy of the book and it's really quite wonderful. Click on the pics for a larger view of the detail. Above is the front/back cover.
Inside Title Page
These pictures are opposite the text. This is page one. I kept the moon as a theme throughout, as the story continues to refer to it, and I've got a special place for the moon in my pictures it seems. I'm starting to see a pattern. Lunacy...probably...possibly?
I buried more and more subtle pics as the book goes on. I wanted this one to be an inside-the-house image, while the rest are more outward, spacey. I was hoping to capture the last few visions you might have or combine in your mind as you drift off to sleep.
We're clearly in outer space now. Although a closer look reveals a sailing ship on the ocean and more.
I like this one especially. I got the idea of basically laying in bed and letting your mind wander into space, but then as you fall asleep I wanted to convey the idea of going under water as a metaphor for sinking into your own dream world. Here's that last moment just above the water where there's a reflection, and so, two of everything. Even Mona Lisa, if you care to dig.
This one is a bit dark, but intentionally so, and another of my favorites. I wanted the book to have a kind of depth that would reveal more and more if you slow down and take the time to look. Now we're under water, looking upward, or maybe out in space, or on some lonesome road...or in some office cubical in need of a 5-hour energy shot.

The is a promo poster for the greatest band that never existed. It's one of those "That would be a great band name" sort of moments.
